Mental ill health costs UK employers an estimated £56 billion per year. The business case for proactive investment in employee mental health has never been stronger — or better evidenced.

The Scale of the Problem

Mental ill health is the leading cause of long-term sickness absence in the UK. According to research commissioned by the government, it costs UK employers an estimated £56 billion per year — through absenteeism, presenteeism (working while unwell), and staff turnover. Depression and anxiety alone account for approximately half of all working days lost to ill health.

These figures are striking. But they tell only part of the story. The human cost — the individuals whose careers are derailed, whose relationships are damaged, whose quality of life is diminished by untreated mental health difficulties — is not captured in any economic model.

The ROI of Proactive Investment

The business case for investing in employee mental health is now well-evidenced. A landmark analysis by Deloitte found that every £1 invested in mental health interventions generates an average return of £5 in reduced absenteeism, presenteeism, and staff turnover. For organisations with high rates of mental health-related absence, the return can be significantly higher.

The most effective interventions are not simply EAP programmes — which, while valuable, are often underused and insufficiently integrated into the broader organisational culture. The evidence points to a more comprehensive approach: proactive mental health training for managers, early identification and support for employees showing signs of difficulty, clear pathways to specialist assessment and treatment, and a genuine organisational commitment to psychological safety.
